Playing Pool and/or Billiards
Do you enjoy shooting some pool with your partner, family member, or friends? Many Fletcher hotels offer the opportunity to play pool and billiards. It's a timeless and enjoyable activity. There are various ways to play the game. Below, we briefly explain the variations of 8-ball, 9-ball, and Carom billiards.
Playing Pool - 8 ball
The most well-known form of playing pool is 8-ball. All 16 balls are used, including 1 white, 1 black, 7 striped, and 7 solid balls. All balls, except the white one, are arranged in a triangle, and the white ball is placed on the other side of the table. The game begins when the white ball is struck, and it hits one or more balls in the triangle. The decision on who should pocket the striped balls is made once someone pots the first striped or solid ball. If you pot a striped ball first, you must then pocket all the striped balls, and your opponent must pocket all the solid balls. If you successfully pocket the correct ball, you get another turn. Be careful not to pocket the black ball until all your balls are potted; otherwise, you lose the game. Potting the black ball can be done following the official rules or the 'friends' rules. According to the official rules, you need to indicate the pocket in which you intend to pot the black ball. If you're playing by 'friends' rules, you must pot the black ball in the opposite pocket to where you last potted a striped or solid ball. If the white ball is potted in the same turn as the black ball, your opponent wins.
Playing Pool - 9 ball
Another variant of playing pool is 9-ball. This variant is played with 9 sequentially numbered balls (1 to 9) and a white ball. The 9 balls are placed in a diamond shape, in almost the same position as with 8-ball. The white ball also starts from the same position. The goal is to play the balls in order. As long as you manage to pocket the correct ball, you can continue playing. If you miss the pocket, it's your opponent's turn. Your opponent continues with the lowest-numbered ball on the table. The player who manages to pocket the last ball with the number 9 at the end of the game wins, provided the white ball doesn't end up in the pocket.
Billiards - Carom
This free-form style of billiards is the simplest, as there are virtually no restrictions, and the rules are quite straightforward: With the cue ball, you must make sure to hit the other two balls. Each player has their own cue ball. For example, if you are playing with the plain white ball, you must hit either the white ball with spots or the red ball. In the same turn, you must ensure that the other ball is also (indirectly) hit. The order in which this happens doesn't matter. For each time you successfully hit both balls, you earn a point and can continue playing. Missed? Then it's your opponent's turn.
